New Hikuwai Bridge to reconnect East Coast communities
Construction is kicking off this month on a new Hikuwai Bridge in Tairāwhiti, marking a major step in strengthening State Highway 35 between Tolaga Bay and Tokomaru Bay.
Transport Minister Chris Bishop says the original bridge was severely damaged by Cyclone Gabrielle, cutting off vital access across the Hikuwai River.
A temporary Bailey bridge has been in place since June 2023.
The new two-lane bridge will span around 100 metres and is designed to better withstand floods, earthquakes, and river debris. It features deeper piles, stronger columns, and improved bearings to boost durability and safety.
The $50 million project is being led by the Transport Rebuild East Coast Alliance, with CLL Service and Solutions heading construction, alongside local firms like Parata and Currie Construction.
Piling work begins later this month, with cranes already arriving on site.
Bishop says restoring resilient infrastructure is key to reconnecting East Coast communities to each other and the country.
