Māori Development Minister Tama Potaka has confirmed seven new appointments to key Māori entities, aimed at strengthening te reo Māori, governance, and economic development.

“These roles will help advance te reo Māori revitalisation, strengthen the Waitangi Tribunal, and unlock Māori potential—for the benefit of all Aotearoa,” says Potaka.

Among the appointments:

  • Dr Te Rina Warren joins Te Mātāwai, bringing expertise in Māori and Indigenous education.
  • Mahanga Pihama and Dr Tātere MacLeod take up roles at Te Taura Whiri, with deep experience in media and language revitalisation.
  • Te Māngai Pāho welcomes Reikura Kahi as Chair and Kingi Kiriona as Deputy Chair, both leaders in Māori broadcasting and capability development.
  • Mark Gray joins Poutama Trust, bringing corporate and governance experience to support Māori enterprise.
  • Juliet Tainui-Hernandez is appointed to the Waitangi Tribunal, enhancing its legal and economic expertise.

Potaka says the appointments reflect a commitment to Māori-led solutions and the goal of one million te reo Māori speakers by 2040.
