The Government is investing $120 million to strengthen New Zealand’s hospitals and emergency departments.
Health Minister Simeon Brown says $100 million will go towards upgrading hospitals nationwide, funding 21 local projects to expand clinical spaces, modernise facilities, and improve essential infrastructure like heating and power.
The upgrades will benefit hospitals from Whangārei to Queenstown, with projects including new cancer treatment centres and expanded emergency departments.
An additional $20 million will boost emergency department staffing over the next nine months.
The funding will help hospitals recruit more doctors, nurses, and support staff, with a focus on hospitals facing the most pressure.
The aim is to improve patient flow, increase weekend capacity, and strengthen support roles.
Brown says these investments will deliver faster, safer care for patients and support frontline health workers.
