Māori tourism surges with global partnerships and national recognition
A major boost for Māori tourism is underway, with new multicultural initiatives and strong representation in national awards.
Dale Stevens, Chair of New Zealand Māori Tourism, says Māori operators are finalists in seven out of ten categories at the upcoming Tourism New Zealand Awards, including Te Puia, Kohutapu Lodge & Tribal Tours, and Tohu Experiences, reflecting the sector’s growing influence.
“That’s something we’re looking at increasing with Maori tourism, how we work with ethnic and indigenous tourism entities around the world. The world’s shrinking as we get more and more mobile and we connect more and more regularly. So this type of interaction, collaboration between ethnic groups across the world is fantastic. It’s just the best thing going forward,” says Stephens.
Stephens encourages aspiring Māori tourism operators to reach out for support, with resources and expertise available to help turn ideas into reality.
The awards dinner will be held on 29 October at Tākina Wellington Convention and Exhibition Centre.
