Auckland’s Heritage Festival is back and this year, it’s celebrating a major milestone: 75 years since the 1950 Empire Games.
Running from the 20th of September to the 5th of October, the festival’s theme, Auckland at Play, honours the city’s sporting spirit past and present.
The 1950 Games were a defining moment, drawing nearly 250,000 spectators and featuring 590 athletes from 12 countries.
Mayor Wayne Brown says the festival is a chance to relive that pride and celebrate the everyday champions who’ve brought communities together through sport.
Events will span the region from exhibitions and talks to guided tours and workshops all exploring Auckland’s rich recreational history.
