The Maranga Mai – Rise Up! Pūtaiao Research Symposium is underway in Whangārei this week.
Held at Te Puna o Te Mātauranga Marae at NorthTec, the two-day event brings together Māori scientists, educators, iwi leaders and students to explore the intersections of science and mātauranga Māori.
Organised by Waipapa Taumata Rau, the University of Auckland, the symposium highlights Indigenous-led research and celebrates Māori innovation — from aquaculture to artificial intelligence.
Keynote speakers include Matua Taipari Munro, Associate Professor Dan Hikuroa, Professors Suzanne Purdy and Jacqueline Beggs, Dr Daniel Wilson, and Matua Te Warihi Hetaraka.
Darlene Cameron, Kaitiaki of Māori and Pacific Leadership, says it’s an exciting time for iwi-led mātauranga to shape the future of science in Aotearoa.
“We’ve invited and welcomed iwi groups who work in the putaiao to come to the university. It’s an amazing space to be in and a very exciting time,” says Cameron.
