Liquor Law Reforms Raise Concerns Over Māori Community Voice
Changes to liquor laws could make it harder for Māori communities to oppose new bottle stores.
Associate Justice Minister Nicole McKee has proposed reforms to the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act that would limit objections to liquor licenses to only local residents and allow applicants to respond at hearings
Raawiri Ratuu of Kookiri Ki Taamakimakaurau Trust says the changes are a step backwards.
“I could use Papakura Marae as an example, who work in Manurewa. Now, why can’t they, who have a responsibility or work with whanau in Manurewa, why can’t they object? This coalition government is actually squeezing it and saying, ‘Well, unless you live in this box here, in this area here, you ain’t got a shot’, and this is really bad,” says Ratuu.
Ratuu says prioritising economic growth risks deepening alcohol-related harm in Māori communities.
There is no set date for when these amendments will be introduced.
