rahoroi kaupapa: the latest in the Iran – Israel conflict
Over the past week, Israel has launched large-scale airstrikes across Iran; targeting nuclear and military infrastructure in Tehran, Tabriz, Kermanshah, Natanz, Bushehr, and Isfahan. Key sites hit include missile production facilities, surface-to-air missile batteries, and Iran’s Organisation of Defensive Innovation and Research (SPND) in Tehran; reportedly involved in nuclear weapons research. Israeli Intelligence/Mossad support via covert drones was instrumental in disabling Iranian air-defence systems before the air raids Iran has launched at least 17 waves of missile and drone strikes targeting military bases in southern Israel, including Nevatim, Hatzerim, Beersheba, Tel Aviv, and Haifa.
A Sejjil missile struck Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba, injuring dozens and forcing hospital evacuation; widely described as a potential war crime. Sirens in Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Negev regions accompanied Iranian attacks; though Israel’s Iron Dome defence intercepted many, some missiles and drones broke through. In Iran, Iranian human rights groups report 657+ dead (including at least 263 civilians) and over 2,000 wounded. In Israel, around 24 killed and 240+ injured; with dozens hurt at Beersheba’s Soroka hospital alone. Europe convened emergency talks in Geneva with Iran’s FM Abbas Araqchi. He stated Iran will only return to nuclear negotiations once Israeli strikes cease.
UN Secretary-General Guterres warned the conflict is “racing” toward crisis and urged restraint. European ministers emphasized the need for negotiations to prevent further escalation. President Trump stated the US is ready to intervene;but will wait up to two weeks before deciding on potential strikes, including targeting Iran’s Fordow uranium enrichment site. He confirmed US forces have assisted Israel defensively but ruled out committing ground troops so far. Diplomatic window: Iran signals openness to dialogue; but only in return for a complete ceasefire on its territory. US decision: The next two weeks are critical as Washington weighs involvement; potentially reshaping the conflict’s trajectory. Conflict dynamics: Israel is committed to a “lengthy campaign”; Iran continues strategic missile strikes. Civilian impact: Escalation risks include ongoing hospital strikes, civilian casualties, and humanitarian crisis spreading across the region. The Israel–Iran confrontation has entered a perilous phase marked by sustained airstrikes, deepening civilian tolls, and high geopolitical tension. With diplomacy stalling and Washington’s decision pending, the situation remains volatile; where hope for escalation or de-escalation hinges on high-stakes choices in the coming days.
