Cabinet Minister Chris Bishop, has told Waatea Correspondent, Claudette Hauiti, that he wont be apologising for comments he made at the Aotearoa Music Awards. The comments were made during a Stan Walker performance. Bishop told reporters that
“I was frustrated and annoyed by the sort of overt politicking around it. It’s not about Stan Walker, I actually quite like Stan Walker, actually quite liked his performance. It was just the sort of politicisation of it that frustrated me. It’s not clear what I’d be apologising for.”
The fallout from Chris Bishops comments at the Aotearoa Music Awards continued with the organisation who put on the awards speaking out and releasing a statement on their social media accounts:
“The inappropriate comments made by Hon. Chris Bishop during Stan Walker’s performance have no place at the Aotearoa Music Awards,”
“The Awards respect and honour te ao Māori and we were proud to support Stan with his vision for his powerful rendition of Māori Ki Te Ao.”
