At the weekend, Te Arikinui Kuini Nga wai hono i te po marked Te Hau o Makuru, the 30th anniversary of the Raupatu Settlement at Tūrangawaewae.
Tukoroirangi Morgan, chairperson of Te Arataura at Waikato-Tainui, says there is a new focus on self-reliance, with an aim to devolve funding to 68 marae communities.
He says the initiative will better equip members to possibly buy local supermarkets.
Waikato was the first iwi to engage in a Treaty Settlement, paving the way for others, with Ngāpuhi being the last iwi on the Government’s Settlement list.
