The Iwi Leaders Chair says the reason for reviewing the Waitangi Tribunal is all lies.
When announced initially by the Minister of Development Tama Potaka, the purpose was to review the tribunal is still fit for purpose as it had not been reviewed in some time.
Ngāti Kahu Iwi Chair Margaret Mutu, who also chairs the Iwi Leaders Forum, says the tribunal reviews itself all the time as a result of the ongoing breaches of the treaty perpetrated by the many NZ governments over the years.
Mutu believes the truth of the matter is David Seymour wants to hide those past injustices by getting rid of the tribunal altogether and thinks that is the real reason for the review.
“What we know really well from David Seymour is that he has always wanted the tribunal gone. He does not want to ever have to account for the fact that not only has every government in this country stolen anything and everything, he wants to make sure that its covered with a blanket of amnesia, so that all the criminal activities that have been carried out need to be forgotten so that they can carry on exploiting the country…”
