NZTA has confirmed the preferred route from Te Hana to Whangārei, linking Tāmaki Makaurau to Te Tai Tokerau.
Transport Minister Chris Bishop says it’s a chance to boost jobs and growth, like the Waikato Expressway did for its region.
The new four-lane road will bypass key pressure points on SH1, including the Brynderwyns, which are prone to slips.
Minister Shane Jones says it’s a top priority in the coalition agreement and will make the region more resilient and connected.
The final route will be confirmed around August or September.
