Labour Leader Chris Hipkins says Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s no-show at Thursday’s Treaty Principles Bill debate is cowardly.
The controversial Bill is set to be voted down by all parties at second reading, including National and NZ First.
Luxon says his schedule won’t allow him to attend, but Hipkins says he must front the divisive bill he signed off on.
“I certainly think not being here is a cowardly maneuver. I think him running away from it shows a total lack of leadership. I think he should front up. He should explain why he agreed to this debate in the first place, and he should articulate why it is that the National Party are now voting against it,” says Hipkins.
The Justice Select Committee recommends rejecting the Bill, with 90% of submissions opposing it.
