Hinewhare Harawira, the sister of Hone Harawira, passed away yesterday at the age of 71 and begins her journey to Whakapara in Tr Tai Toekrau today.
Hinewhare was a fearless advocate for Tino Rangatiratanga. She was a powerful voice for her people, leading hīkoi to Waitangi and Parliament and working with the New Zealand Playcentre Federation.
Hinewhare will lie at Ngā Whare Waatea Marae in Auckland today after spending her first night at home in Avondale.
On Wednesday, she will travel to Te Tii Marae in Waitangi, and on Thursday to her home marae in Whakapara.
Her tangihanga will be held either Friday or Saturday, with confirmation later today.
