Māori Queen host her first Tūrangawaewae Regatta as Arikinui
Te Arikinui Kuini Nga wai hono i te po welcomed the masses to her first Tūrangawaewae Regatta as Arikinui on Saturday, as the prestigious Tainui Waka event took place on the Waikato River at Tūrangawaewae Marae.
The Regatta, established in 1896 under Arikinui Mahuta, was created to unite the community and iwi of the Ngāruawāhia region.
The day’s events featured waka races, ceremonial waka taua, and waka pakihi, alongside land-based competitions such as wood chopping.
Kapa haka groups from Tainui and across the country, including Te Matatini champions Ngāti Whakaue, also performed.
