MIT Relaunches Māori Nursing Degree Programme
Manukau Institute of Technology has relaunched its Bachelor of Māori Nursing degree to boost Māori nurse numbers.
The program started in 2020 with support from the Kiingitanga but was paused due to COVID-19 and admin changes.
Deputy Chief Executive Māori, Wiremu Manaia, says with Te Pūkenga being disestablished, MIT has decided to restart the course.
He says Māori are 17% of the population but only 7% of nurses, so more Māori nurses are urgently needed.
“Māori health is still not in a great position, but it is better than it’s been in the past, but it’s changing because we’re aging,” says Manaia.
With high unemployment, Manaia expects strong student interest.
A pōwhiri for the 22 new students will be held this Friday at the Manukau Campus.
