Systemic Failures Contributing to Auckland’s Homelessness Crisis, Expert Warns
A Māori homelessness academic claims systemic failures are at the root of Auckland’s homelessness crisis, which saw a 53% rise over four months ending in January.
Auckland Council is seeking central government support.
Shiloh Groot from the University of Auckland, who has studied homelessness for 15 years, notes that effective kaupapa Māori housing programs like Te Whare Hinātōre struggle to scale.
Groot says addressing homelessness requires a multi-ministry government approach, not just funding from the Ministries of Justice and Housing.
“I think this attempt to standardise is terrible, because everybody has such high and complex needs, and it’s just not going to work that way,” says Groot.
