Manaaki Rangatahi relationships lead Brooke Pao Stanley says the Government is making it harder for disadvantaged whānau to access housing, so South Auckland is taking action to end homelessness.

This month, South Auckland charities Manaaki Rangatahi and Mā Te Huruhuru will host a community event to share insights and develop a Youth Emergency Housing Crisis Plan.

Pao Stanley says kaupapa Māori-led initiatives are gaining recognition in reports like the Salvation Army’s State of the Nation and the Government should integrate kaupapa Māori approaches into wraparound services to improve outcomes.

“They should be looking to copy them. They should be working with those services, instead of removing funding from these services, looking to amplify and support them way more,” says Pao-Stanley.

The community event takes place on 28 March in Māngere.
