Te Matatini may choose a different host than expected.
Te Matatini o Te Kāhui Maunga set a festival record with 55 teams competing over four days at Pukekura/Brooklands Bowl.
Before the festival ended, Te Tauihu o Te Waka-a-Māui (Nelson-Marlborough) was expected to host Te Matatini 2027.
However, Te Matatini chief executive Carl Ross says that as the festival grows, the organisation must do its “due diligence” in selecting the next host region.
Tenga Rangitauira, manukura tāne for this year’s champions Te Kapa Haka o Ngāti Whakaue, says Rotorua is ready to host.
He says to his knowledge, Tainui Waka has also put forward a bid, but regardless of the location, he will support the Kaupapa.
