The nominees for the Tauranga City Council Te Awanui Māori Ward by-election are confirmed.
The by-election follows Mikaere Sydney’s resignation in January due to ill health.
The candidates are:
Suaree Borrell – last year’s runner-up, deputy chair of Ngāti Ranginui.
George Ngatai – CEO of Whānau Ora Community Clinic in Auckland, breakfast radio host at Aotearoa FM.
David Ratima – an experienced lawyer.
Hemi Rolleston – Sydney’s uncle, experienced education board member and chair of Ngāti Whakaue Assets Trust.
Ange Webster – who has a background in disability, education, and tourism.
Voting opens on April 7, when documents are sent out.
Election day is April 29, with results announced on May 5.
The council’s Māori wards will go to a referendum during this year’s local body elections in September.
