Iwi radio to provide live haka translations
Iwi Māori radio will assist Te Matatini in providing live translations throughout the National Kapa Haka Festival in Ngāmotu.
Ngāti Hine FM station manager Erana Fenton, the lead producer for Haka Translate, says a team of 12 translators will simultaneously broadcast translations of each kapa’s waiata tira, whakaeke, whaikōrero, mōteatea, poi, waiata ā ringa, haka, and whakawātea.
She says Te Matatini has previously provided translation services alongside host iwi frequencies, but this year, the Haka Translate feature will be exclusively available on the Te Matatini app.
The Haka Translate function began in 2007 with just two translators working in English, evolving into the comprehensive service it is today.
“From 2017, we’ve had the introduction of Mandarin. And at the last Matatini, it was the introduction of some from Cook Island Fiji in Tongan. And this year we’ve got the addition of the audio description,” says Fenton.
The Te Matatini app can be used both at the venue and at home.
