Today, oral submissions continue on the Treaty Principles Bill in the Justice Select Committee.
From 8 to 10 this morning, submitters will speak with the committee, which has scheduled a total of 80 hours of hearings starting from January 27.
Key submitters today included former Education Minister Hekia Parata, anti-co-governance spokesperson Julian Batchelor, Local Government NZ, two members of the 50 King’s Counsel, and Treaty law specialist Maui Solomon.
Te Pāti Māori committee member, MP Takuta Ferris, says the submissions process has highlighted how well those opposed to the bill can articulate their arguments without making direct attacks on Pākehā or the Government.
On the other hand, he says, it has also shown how some submitters—especially within the older generation—remain uneducated and resistant to learning about Te Tiriti.
