The latest polls show the coalition government is in danger of returning to the opposition benches next year following a third consecutive drop in support.

In the latest 1News Verian results, a slim majority of voters say the country is heading in the wrong direction and want a change of government.

The 1News Verian poll saw National drop to 34 percent, the ACT Party gain 1 point, and New Zealand First fall to 5 percent.

Labour is up 4 points to 33 percent, the Greens remain steady at 10 percent, and Te Pāti Māori has dropped 3 points to 4 percent.

Based on these results, the left bloc would have 61 seats, the minimum required to form a government.

The 1News poll was conducted during Waitangi Week.

This follows the Taxpayers’ Union Curia poll, which showed similar results.

It marks the third poll indicating a decline for the National-led coalition, with the first drop recorded in a 1News Verian poll in December last year.
