Te Arikinui Kuini Nga wai hono i te po is preparing to welcome the masses to her first Turangawaewae Regatta in Ngāruawāhia as Arikinui.
On March 22, the prestigious Tainui Waka event will take place on the banks of the Waikato River at Tūrangawaewae Marae.
Starting at 8 AM, the day’s events will feature waka races, ceremonial waka taua, and waka pakihi.
Beyond the river activities, there will also be land-based competitions such as wood chopping, along with performances from local kapa haka groups and singer Jordyn with a Why.
The Regatta began in 1896, when Mahuta was arikinui, as a way to unite the community and iwi of the Ngāruawāhia region.
Te Arikinui Kuini Nga wai hono i te po, the eighth in the line of Pōtatau Te Wherowhero and the Kīngitanga, is calling on all Tainui descendants to gather at Tūrangawaewae Marae for the event.
