Auckland Council’s Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board is strongly backing a mural in Manukau to honour former Green MP, the late Fa’anānā Efeso Collins, a beloved community leader.
Collins passed away last year while participating in a ChildFund Water Run charity event in central Auckland.
Led by the Eke Panuku urban regeneration arm of the council, the project has gained momentum as the first anniversary of Collins’ passing on 21 February approaches.
The mural, painted by Janine and Charles Williams, will be installed on the Ronwood Ave car park wall, symbolizing Collins’ deep ties to South Auckland.
With approval from Auckland Transport and support from Collins’ family and mana whenua, work is set to begin on 13 February and be completed by 20 February, pending final council approval.
The mural will feature a portrait of Fa’anānā alongside his quote, “E le tu fa’amauga se tagata”—a reminder that no one stands or succeeds alone.
