A court battle continues over whenua significant to Māori in Te Kamo, Whangārei.
Last month, property developer Onoke Heights Ltd lodged a High Court appeal against an Environment Court decision to cancel resource consents for a 93-home development on Onoke Pā in Te Kamo, Whangārei.
Hapū group Ngāti Kahu o Torongare and the Ngātiwai Trust Board have been fighting housing development on the former pā site since the 1990s when it was rezoned from rural to residential land.
Ngāti Kahu o Torongare spokesperson Nicki Wakefield says after decades of fighting from our kaumātua and hapū, knowing we now have to fight further to protect Onoke Pā is a bitter pill to swallow.
Onoke Heights Ltd is appealing the Environment Court decision in its entirety, with Ngāti Kahu o Torongare now preparing for the High Court.
