East coast trail proposal sparks debate
Te Ikaroa Rāwhiti MP Cushla Tangaere-Manuel says the proposed East Coast El Camino, Te Ara Tipuna, is generating mixed opinions across her electorate.
Te Ara Tipuna, a 500km trail would stretch from Te Toka a Taiau to Tarakeha, with start and end points at Makorori, near Gisborne, and Ōpōtiki. It also includes a loop around Maunga Hikurangi.
Once fully developed, the trail will accommodate hiking, cycling, and horse trekking.
Community notification and consultation hui have been held across the rohe, revealing a range of perspectives.
Tangaere-Manuel says key concerns include investment priorities and the source of funding.
“I mean, that’s the beauty of it. Submissions are open. People, if you have a strong opinion, tukuna ō whakaaro, you know, submit. But I just think, you know, I really encourage people to depersonalize issues, but by all means, have your say,” says Tangaere-Manuel.
The Te Ara Tipuna Trust are now waiting for a hearing date with the Gisborne District Council to argue their case to develop the hikoi.
