Senior Māori Labour MP Willie Jackson has extended his best wishes to James Meager as he steps into his new ministerial roles.
On Sunday, Meager, a first-term MP representing the South Island seat of Rangitata, was promoted in Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s Cabinet reshuffle.
Meager’s new responsibilities include being Minister for Hunting and Fishing, Minister for Youth, Minister for the South Island, and Associate Minister of Transport, while also holding his position as chair of the Justice Select Committee.
Jackson says there are significant expectations placed on Meager, particularly by National supporters, as the “next brown hope,” expressing confidence in his abilities to meet these expectations.
He says he celebrates all Māori success, no matter their political leanings
“He’s an interesting young man. He’s been singled out by the Nats and also by the media. You know you can see that they see him as the most outstanding young talent. So today I say, Well done to him. Good luck to him, and all the best to James,” says Jackson.
The new Ministerial appointments will take effect tomorrow.
