ACC is promoting intergenerational Māori health at this year’s Waka Ama Sprints National Competition, currently being held at Lake Karāpiro.

Over 3,800 paddlers are participating in the six-day tournament, ranging from tamariki to rangatahi and pakeke.

Lance Westrupp, the Principal Mātauranga Māori Advisor at ACC, says this year ACC is providing a Whānau Zone at the loading zone.

Here, paddlers, their whānau, and supporters can access romiromi or other rongoā services while enjoying the races.

He says the tournament offers ACC a valuable opportunity to connect with whānau on a community level.

“One of the great things we know about Waka Ama is that it’s one of few sports in Aotearoa where we get to see three generations of whānau competing in a sporting event, and it’s kaupapa like this that we’re committed to support that promotes health and wellbeing for whānau of all ages,” says Westrupp.

Today features the Corporate Challenge, where sponsors race against each other on the lake.

Westrupp says ACC has a diverse team of paddlers, with participation and whanaungatanga being the main goals for their team.

The tournament concludes on Saturday.
