Māori leaders refine unity proposal
Last Friday, around 300 Māori leaders gathered at Omāhu near Hastings to discuss a proposal for a unified Māori response to government challenges.
The Wānanga-ā-Motu, continues the Hui ā Motu that began last January, initiated by the late Kiingi Tuheitia to encourage Māori unity.
A Hui ā Motu in Omāhu proposed Te Whare o te Rangatiratanga last May, a model to advance Māori aspirations and address government challenges.
This model consists of three parts: an assembly of iwi, hapū, and other Māori groups; the Crown and Parliament; and a joint deliberative body.
Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Trust chair Bayden Barber says this hui was an opportunity to refine the proposal, which will be presented and examined by the motu.
The next hui ā motu is yet to be announced.
