TIPENE charter school to empower Māori boys’ education
A co-principal of TIPENE, formerly St Stephen’s School, says returning to the charter school model provides the school with curriculum flexibility not available under the special character school model.
Last Friday, Associate Education Minister David Seymour held an opening press conference at the school.
TIPENE is the last of seven charter schools set to open in Term One, 2025.
Nathan Durie, a former student of the school, says the charter school model offers financial backing and autonomy to engage effectively with the boys who will attend and live at the school.
“And I think curriculum, to a large degree, will be the biggest change in education, the type of education, the way in which education and curriculum is delivered, I think needs to be experimented with, played with a little bit to see how we can best engage boys,” says Durie.
Nathan Durie says the majority of those opposed to the charter school model prefer the status quo, which statistically does not work for Māori boys.
