Hāngī Master Rewi Spraggon will this week open a hāngī kai cart on the swanky Queenstown waterfront. Meanwhile, he says business has been booming at his permanent hāngī pit site near the town’s airport.
Spraggon is also working with local Tāhuna haukāinga on employment and training opportunities.
He says tough times in Auckland forced him to look elsewhere.
“You know, 50% down on last year, so you’ve gotta move where it’s happening, and so for us, it’s been Queenstown and Queenstown’s really picking up – flying out the door. So you know when you’re in business you’ve gotta make these decisions, so that’s why we’re down here in Tāhuna,” says Spraggon.
Spraggon also recently got a huge boost from media influencer Mark Wiens, who has nearly 11 million YouTube followers, after he featured Spraggon’s hāngī business.
