St Stephens reopens as charter school
Today, the former Māori Anglican boys’ high school, St Stephen’s, now known as TIPENE, will be officially opened as a charter school for Term 1, 2025.
Associate Education Minister David Seymour held an opening press conference at the school, which included a tour of the boarding facilities and refurbished classrooms.
St Stephen’s School was among Aotearoa New Zealand’s oldest and most prestigious boarding schools, predominantly serving young Māori men since it began operations in 1844 in Ōrākei, before moving to Pukekohe in 1933, and eventually closing in 2000.
Seymour says the school will use well-established cultural frameworks and pedagogies that promote and inspire success for Māori boys.
TIPENE will be a full-time boarding school for Māori and Pacific boys in Years 9-13, located in South Auckland.
