Māori resilience shines amid challenging 2024
The Labour Party spokesperson for Cyclone Recovery, Forestry, Tourism, and Hospitality says Māori affected by these issues have shown incredible resilience this year.
Cushla Tangaere-Manuel, who is also the MP for Te Ikaroa-Rāwhiti, says 2024 has been a tough year due to government policies reversing Māori gains, legislative attacks, budget cuts targeting Māori initiatives, and more natural disasters.
She says that throughout Ikaroa-Rāwhiti and wider New Zealand, people have been determined to ensure their rohe thrive.
“You look at the likes of Wairoa, when I went people were stacking up their worldly goods at the end of their driveways covered in silt and soaked and they still had time to give me a smile, have a kōrero with me about coming back stronger,” says Tangaere-Manuel.
