Moana NZ opens $16.5M kōura facility
Yesterday, Aotearoa’s largest 100% Māori-owned fisheries company, Moana New Zealand, opened a new $16.5 million kōura facility in Porirua.
Moana New Zealand Chief Executive Steve Tarrant says Oceans Minister Shane Jones will open the facility, a joint venture with Wellington’s Māori-owned Port Nicholson Fisheries.
“It’s really exciting. It’s a brand new facility that will house, initially, 45 of our kaimahi, um, looking to probably double that over time. It will house a significant number of koura tanks of live exports. And also our live Paua Tua, and also our Ika Business,” says Tarrant.
Steve Tarrant says the new facility will also be fully export-capable, like their Auckland base, which makes a significant difference to the business.
