Nurses strike over pay, safety concerns
More than 30,000 nurses, midwives, and healthcare assistants from the New Zealand Nurses Organisation began the first of a series of planned strikes this week.
Tracy Black of the Nurses Organisation says the key issue is staffing levels, which affect the safety of both patients and nurses.
Additionally, a government pay offer of one percent is considered insulting by some.
“But what I can say is that we have also initiated other rolling strikes throughout New Zealand. So we’ve got another strike that’s coming as well, that will be done in different regions at different times. And that strike notice has already been given to Whatu Ora as well. So we’re going to keep the pressure on,” says Black.
Tracy Black says nurses feel severely undervalued, and proposed government cutbacks are exacerbating the situation.
