Ahead of the scrutiny of Te Arawhiti—The Office for Māori Crown Relations, Minister Tama Potaka refutes claims that Māori-Crown relations are at an all-time low.

Over the weekend, during an interview on TVNZ’s Q&A, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said he believes there is more division in Māori-Crown relations since taking office last year, citing boiling frustrations on both sides.

Potaka says he acknowledges significant challenges in housing, health, and education, where Māori are disproportionately affected and he has a role in helping resolve those issues.

“I know that there’s a lot of concern. I acknowledge the Prime Minister’s comment that Crown Māori relations are not optimal, but that’s part of my role. Certainly, I continue to support the Prime Minister and other ministers to move Crown – Māori relations, Māori-Crown relations in a positive direction,” says Potaka.

The Te Arawhiti scrutiny is expected to conclude by lunchtime.
