Lisa Carrington claims prestigious Māori award
Olympic sprint canoe gold medalist Lisa Carrington won the Albie Pryor Memorial Māori Sports Person of the Year Award at the 2024 Māori Sports Awards.
Held in Tauranga on Saturday, 80 athletes competed for awards across 13 categories.
Carrington, an uri of Ngāti Porou and Te Aitanga-a-Māhaki, is New Zealand’s most successful paddler, with eight gold medals and one bronze to her name, including three golds from the most recent Olympics.
In late October, she also became the first New Zealander to receive one of the Olympic movement’s highest honours, the Outstanding Sporting Career Award.
This marks the seventh time Carrington has won the Māori Sports Person of the Year Award.
