Māori asthma researcher wins Health Award
A marae-based Māori asthma researcher has been recognized at the Royal Society Te Apārangi Research Honours.
Last night in Wellington, Tū Kotahi Māori Asthma and Research Trust manager Cheryl Davies won the Te Tohu Rapuora Medal for her contributions to Māori health leadership.
Davies says Tā Eru Pomare’s call for Māori solutions to address the high rates of asthma-related deaths among Māori tamariki inspired the establishment of the Tū Kotahi Māori Asthma and Research Trust in 1995.
She says nearly 30 years of research show that Māori asthma is hereditary but manageable, which is exactly what the Trust supports whānau with.
“Is just to help our whānau understand what asthma is, and just to support them with helping to manage their asthma and using rongoā as well as a complementary. So rongoā is a big part of the mahi that we do here as well,” says Davies.
