Joe Glen: broadcaster, veteran, te reo champion
Kua hinga he tōtara i roto i te ao nui a Tāne.
Veteran, pioneering Te Karere broadcaster Joe Glen passed away yesterday at the age of 82.
Glen spent nearly 30 years in the New Zealand Special Air Service (SAS) and Air Force, serving in the Malayan, Singapore, Borneo, and Vietnam conflicts.
In 1989, he joined Te Karere as their Wellington-based reporter, focusing on politics, defence, and social issues.
Māori journalist Kereama Wright says Glen’s legacy was being a staple in his household, a te reo Māori superstar to him and his whānau.
“All the way up to until I started becoming a journalist, and then, of course, we had the privilege of meeting Joe and being under the tutelage of Joe at Te Karere. So ae e tika ana te kōrero kua hinga tētahi o ngā totara o te ao pāpāhō Māori, but to te reo Māori and our veterans as well. So he’ll be sorely missed.
Tēnei uri o Ngāti Porou Te Whānau-ā-Apanui is being taken to Kiekie Marae, near Waipiro Bay on the East Coast.
Tomorrow, he will be buried at Taaringaroa Urupā.
