Cushla Tangaere-Manuel urges opposition to bill
Te Tai Rāwhiti MP Cushla Tangaere-Manuel is calling for people to submit their opposition to the Treaty Principles Bill, following Tuesday’s Toitu Te Tiriti Activation on Parliament grounds.
Yesterday, submissions to the select committee opened to the public, with the closing deadline set for January 7, 2025.
Tangaere-Manuel says the select committee process gives the bill more visibility, and the Government has passed bills this year despite over 90% of submissions opposing them.
She says submitting leaves a legacy for whānau and counter claims that the hikoi was a non-event.
“So kia kaha rā tatou. It doesn’t have to be lengthy. Submissions can be as simple as I oppose this bill, but I know that there’ll be people with many more stories to tell,” says Tangaere-Manuel.
Tangaere-Manuel says this bill, and the drama it has caused around haka in the house, has also sparked discussions within Labour on how to incorporate tikanga Māori in the House.
