Willie Jackson: Largest ever Māori protest
Senior Labour Māori MP Willie Jackson says yesterday’s Parliament protest was the largest Māori demonstration he has ever witnessed, with everyone contributing to its success.
Official attendance figures fluctuate around 40,000, but Jackson estimates that over 50,000 people participated in the Toitū Te Tiriti Parliament march.
He acknowledges Te Pāti Māori’s leadership in organizing the hīkoi and credits a collective effort across the political spectrum for bringing such a significant number of people to Parliament Grounds.
He says while Labour may not support all Te Pāti Māori policies, Jackson says this kaupapa is one they can unanimously agree upon.
“We will support one policy, and that’s the policy of justice. And the treaty principles is absolutely a policy pertaining to justice now, and that’s why you’ve got the mass that you got yesterday of all different political denominations plus, National Party people there too. That’s what was fantastic about yesterday. It was a magnificent protest. Fabulous protests to be involved in,” says Jackson.
