New Statistics NZ figures reveal nearly 1 in 10 Kiwi children are trapped in persistent child poverty.
That’s 98,900 tamariki, with Māori and Pasifika children disproportionately affected.
Harry Yu Shi of the Child Poverty Action Group says having so many children trapped in persistent child poverty is unacceptable.
“Having an extended period of poverty during childhood is damaging, and being able to lead a positive life and their chances to find fulfilment. it’s a struggle for us to achieve social cohesion and unity,” says Shi.
Harry Yu Shi says for the sake of the country’s future, the government must not lower its priority on tackling child poverty.
