Former Minister for Foreign Affairs Nanaia Mahuta says New Zealand must maintain a balanced approach with its international relationships, as AUKUS could disrupt our Pacific neighbours.
AUKUS is a security pact between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, focusing on sharing advanced technology, including nuclear-powered submarines, to counter regional security threats and strengthen military capabilities.
Mahuta says the Government needs to ensure the pact won’t cause any regional spillover into our part of the Pacific.
“No doubt, through various forums, like the Pacific Island forums, will continue to be discussions around, how do we maintain stability and reject the superpower struggle that often happens between the US and China,” says Mahuta.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has discussed with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese New Zealand’s interest in exploring potential collaboration on advanced capability projects under AUKUS Pillar II.
