Ikaroa-Rāwhiti MP faces new boundary changes
Te Ikaroa-Rāwhiti Labour MP Cushla Tangaere-Manuel says forthcoming electoral boundary changes, impacting her already geographically vast electorate, present yet another challenge she will have to navigate.
The changes are driven by data from the 2023 Census and the Māori Electoral Option, which will also see one North Island general electorate removed and incorporated into one or more existing electorates.
Ikaroa-Rāwhiti stretches from East Cape to Wainuiomata in Wellington, and Tangaere-Manuel believes adding a Wellington suburb would be the best solution.
“To me, it would make sense if it just moved to include Petone – because I do still have parts of Lower Hutt – but not Petone. That would make sense, and that would be easier to navigate,” says Tangaere-Manuel.
Cushla Tangaere-Manuel says draft proposals will be announced in April next year.
