This afternoon, Associate Justice Minister David Seymour released his Treaty Principles Bill.

The bill proposes:

Principle One: The government has full power to govern, and parliamentarians have full power to make laws.

Principle Two: The Crown recognises and will respect and protect the rights hapū and iwi Māori had when they signed the Treaty/Te Tiriti. However, these rights only apply if they are confirmed through a settlement under the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975, particularly if they differ from the rights of others.

Principle Three: Everyone is equal before the law and entitled to equal protection and benefit of the law without discrimination; and the equal enjoyment of the same fundamental human rights.

Seymour confirmed the first reading will be held on 14 November.
