Iron Māori aims to gather around 2,500 young and old participants to promote better health among Māori.
Starting tomorrow, athletes will gather in Napier for the rangatahi and kaumatua triathlon events, with the adult races scheduled for Saturday.
Amanda Hita, a participant in Iron Māori for the past three years, says her whānau is her biggest inspiration.
Her mokopuna are enthusiastic supporters, and she’s hoping to encourage her dad to join in as well.
“Hopefully when we go to the Tamaki one, because I was signing them up, and then the cousins up there, Ngāti Whātua, had something else planned, but I was like, ‘Oh, I’m in first. My Dad, please. Can I just have him for the weekend?’ But Dad wants to do it. But it all depends on what’s happening with our whānau up there. I think we had a hui over our marae in Waikāretu. So we’ll see,” says Hita.
Iron Māori Tāmaki is set to take place on November 16.
