Pākehā share personal stories of racism
Pākehā are recalling personal stories of racism against Māori in a book called ‘Leave Your Big Boots at the Door’.
17 Pākehā provide first hand accounts of racism against Māori and their work to eliminate it.
Those profilled in the book come from a range of occupations, including police, education, health, psychology, social services, Corrections, business, and the law.
Author Dr Lorraine MacLeod says Pākehā need to look into their own culture and what that means for Māori.
“My challenge is to fellow Pākehā, to first of all, learn about their culture and dominant culture in this country, what that means for Māori. It’s a very complex issue now that we’re more than 180 years on from Te Tiriti, but we still need to look at that,” say MacLeod.
