Kura Kaupapa Māori students excel in NCEA
Ākonga at Kura Kaupapa Māori are more likely to receive NCEA merit and excellence endorsements than those at comparable mainstream schools.
A New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) report shows that nearly three-quarters of Year 12 and 13 students at Kura Kaupapa Māori achieved NCEA levels 2 or 3 in 2023.
Te Rūnanga o ngā Kura Kaupapa Māori co-chairperson, Rawiri Wright, says the report shows the Te Aho Matua structure and other teaching practices are working.
“People are all of a sudden saying, How does this happen? How can this happen? We’ve had an education system in this country which is now 200 years old versus our system, which is barely 40 years old. And how can it be kids in our system outperforming almost every other student group in any other schooling group, by 10-15-20 percentage points,” says Wright.
The report states the six subjects with the most credits reported for students in Kura Kaupapa were English, Maths, Physical Education, Te Ao Haka, Te Reo Māori, and Te Reo Rangatira.
