Te Ahurea Tino Rangatiratanga unites kura
This weekend, Te Ahurea Tino Rangatiratanga will bring high school kapa haka groups together from across Tāmaki Makaurau.
Westlake Boys’ High School in Takapuna will host 22 schools for the two-day festival.
Harley Emry, Deputy Principal of Te Kura Māori o Ngā Tapuwae, who hosted last year, says seeing many kura auraki participate in the festival shows how schools increasingly embrace te ao Māori.
“It’s really awesome to see more kura actually stepping up, and making their principals, Pākeha principals and boards accountable to ngā mahi kapa haka me te reo Māori. So, it is exciting. It’s exciting that they have somewhere else to go like you know Poly(fest) is awesome too and it just gives them another stepping stone to be stronger,” says Emry.
